“The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.” ~ King James Bible, Isaiah 19:14
God is frustrated that the Eyptians will not worship Him (seemingly because He, Himself, ‘has mingled a perverse spirit’ in their midst) and so decides to punish His victims for a situation He created in the first place. He plans to do this by causing catastrophic failures of labour and commerce, in part by withdrawing access to natural resources, viz the means of production, seemingly proving correct those who would assert that God is not a Marxist. The preceding excerpt from Isaiah predicts that the economically shell-shocked Egyptians will reel like a drunkard staggering through his own vomit. This would appear to bolster the assertions of conservative politicians who posit that if you’re not working then you’re clearly sitting around getting drunk.
